Volunteer Session - August 20, 2016

A bit cooler this day when a group of volunteers, under the direction of Scott Andersen, met again at the Old Burying Ground to continue to repair gravestones beginning at 8:00 a.m. and lasting until around 2:00 p.m. The group consisted of Scott and Venus Andersen, Mike Anderson, Jackie Doles, Skylar Grate, John King, Diana and Don Zimmerman. More stones were cleaned, others repaired and straightened and an above ground box was rebuilt and cleaned. Dolly Smith and her granddaughter also stopped by to see the activity and volunteer for future sessions.

Many thanks to ALL the volunteers who helped this day and those who volunteer throughout the year making this a very successful project.

More sessions will be planned for the future to continue this massive effort. If you would like to participate, give the Society a call and check our website calendar.

Box tomb completed. Venus (hiding behind the stone) cleaned it and moved on to cleaning the stone next to it.

Don Zimmerman beginning work to lift up this stone.

Diana Zimmerman hard at work cleaning a stone.

Don's gonna need a longer shovel.

Jackie cleaned many stones today.

Skylar returned to help us clean gravestones.

Mike beginning to dig out one stone so it could be lifted and straightened.

Three stones of the James Patterson family had to be removed, lifted, straightened and cleaned. Here are two of them.

The third Patterson stone was very large and in two pieces. Here is the bottom part finally exposed.

Venus cleaning the top part of the James Patterson stone.

Scott and Jackie discuss how to proceed.

Jackie holding the top piece. It will be a challenge to get the two pieces together due to the missing pieces (but we have a plan).
