Volunteer Session - August 3, 2016

Another hot and muggy day, but a small group of dedicated volunteers, under the direction of Scott Andersen, met again at the Old Burying Ground to continue to repair gravestones beginning at 8:00 a.m. and lasting until around noon. The group consisted of Scott and Venus Andersen, John King, Patsy Smith, Wendy Ellis, Mike Anderson, Harold Schmidt, Kay Scheeler, Gloria Losey and her friends (joining us for the first time) Diana and Don Zimmerman. Stones were cleaned and another set of two massive stones required the chain hoist to get lifted to its proper position.

Many thanks to ALL the volunteers who helped this day and those who volunteer throughout the year making this a very successful project.

More sessions will be planned for the future to continue this massive effort. If you would like to participate, give the Society a call and check our website calendar.

Wendy and Patsy (not pictured) focus on a family member's gravestone and other gravestones nearby.

The gravestone from Patsy's family that was cleaned.

Harold beginning the process of removing dirt prior to straightening a stone.

Diana and Don Zimmerman cleaning stones.

Venus took on the task of cleaning one of the above ground stone enclosures.

Kay joined in the fun helping Venus.

Yes, that's Mike underneath that hat!

Diana really enjoyed her first work session.

Gloria gave Diana tips on cleaning.

This one required the hoist.

The two markers on a massive base had sunk over time and were leaning.

Another view before work began.

Once leveled, one of the stones required Scott's touch to attach with a mortar mix as Mike looks on.

These two large stones were on top of a huge base which required the hoist to lift before we could level.

Scott repaired some neighboring gravestones.

Dosen't that row of gravestones look great now? The little box tomb will be next.
